Never called anyone ‘Godfather’ or ‘Sicilian Mafia’ in Panmagate case: Justice Asif Khosa

Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa on Wednesday has clarified that he has never called anyone as Godfather or Sicilian mafia in Panmagate case.

Justice Khosa, who was a member of the bench that announced Panama decision, asked Deputy Attorney General Amir Rehman whether he has read Panama verdict, continuing that the reference to the Sicilian Mafia was made because of former Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) leader Nihal Hashmi’s threats to the judiciary. He stressed, “Nowhere in the verdict did we mention The Godfather,” adding The Godfather was a hero but the media turned him into villain. There is a sea of difference between a news and opinion, he added.

Addressing the Deputy Attorney General, he queried, “Have you read the Panamagate judgement? Was Nawaz Sharif was called Godfather?” Deputy Attorney General responded, “No. You did not call Nawaz Sharif Godfather.”

Justice Asif Saeed Khosa that labels and statements are being attributed to judges out of context, and urged everyone to not repeat them. “Do not attribute that which has not been said by the apex court in its verdict,” he said.

Justice Khosa also urged media persons to exercise caution while reporting the court proceedings.

Meanwhile, Justice Dost Mohammad said that the role of Godfather was heroic but it has been taken as negative. Godfather used to give money to the poverty-stricken people by taking it from rich people, he added.

The three-judge bench headed by Justice Asif Saeed Khosa has also discharged contempt notice against Jang Group CEO Mir Shakilur Rehman and reporter Ahmed Noorani over the alleged false news. The court while delivering short verdict said that the respondents have submitted the show cause notices so the contempt of court notices are withdrawn.
