India sealed its fate as a defeated occupation force in Kashmir when it assassinated two veteran freedom activists and resistance leaders Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhat in Tihar Jail, New Delhi. India can hang all Kashmiris but it cannot crush the ideology of freedom. This came in a statement issued in Islamabad by YFK–International Kashmir Lobby Group (Youth Forum For Kashmir), on the occasion of 5th death anniversary of Afzal Guru and 33rd of Maqbool Bhat.
The trial of Guru and Bhat exposed the huge claims made by India of democracy and secularism. These executions were condemned by all factions of Kashmiris and were labeled as judicial murders. Kashmiris protested against these killings not in Kashmir only but all over the world.
In April 2013, Amnesty International showed a serious concern about the shoddy execution of Guru by stating that, “Afzal Guru was executed without his family was being informed and his body was buried secretly. There are also serious doubts about the quality of evidence and whether he was adequately represented legally during his trial”.
Recently, Guru’s son Ghalib Guru has slapped on the face of Indian democracy by securing distinction in class 12 board exams; scored 441 out of 500 marks, and rejected the false allegations of terrorism on his father by asserting in an interview to a local Indian newspaper that, “I want to pursue Medical Education and want to become a doctor. It is the dream of my parents that I become a doctor and I will try to fulfill it”. Afzal Guru was also pursuing Medical Education before his arrest.
Furthermore, Guru’s family is still facing the dirty tactics of Indian government. Despite repeating requests by Guru’s family to the Director General of Prison-Tihar Jail New Delhi, Guru’s body did not returned yet to the family. India is also denying passport to the wife of Afzal Guru, Tabassum Guru and their lone son Ghalib Guru. The mother and son duo had applied for passport in 2015 to be able to perform Hajj, but in this regard, Indian government is not acting even on the orders of their own blemished judicial system.
YFK condemns the flawed Indian justice and illegal occupation of Kashmir. It draws the attention of international community to take notice of the unjustified trials of Guru & Bhat and also thousands of other Kashmiris who are paying the price of sins which they did not commit.
